Julia Computing LLC, a startup that provides training, commercial support, and consulting for those who want to use Julia language, has raised $600K from US-based Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
Launched in May this year to cater to the demand for commercial support for the language, the startup was founded by the creators of Julia language – Viral Shah, Jeff Bezanson, Stefan Karpinski, and MIT applied mathematics professor, Alan Edelman. Viral B. Shah is also a former UIDAI executive.
Julia computing provides a sophisticated compiler, distributed parallel execution, numerical accuracy, and an extensive library of fast mathematical functions.
In technical terms, Julia is a free alternative proprietary tool for performing data science, like that of MathWorks’ MATLAB and Wolfram’s Mathematica, and is more contemporary than open-source languages such as R and Python.
According to the founding members, various companies are hiring data scientists to make more data-driven decisions. Tools like Julia come in handy in such a scenario.
Julia Computing LLC operates out of Boston, New York and has plans to set up office in Bangalore. It claims a clientele base in these cities as well as a few others, where the Julia tool is being used in universities for teaching and research, and by businesses in areas as diverse as engineering, finance, and ecommerce, to name a few.
